Head and neck cancer follow-up care closer to home

Since December 2018, head and neck cancer patients from Swindon and Wiltshire have been offered follow up care at Great Western Hospital in Swindon to avoid frequent journeys to Oxford University Hospitals.

Background to the project.

The 'Care Closer to Home' project, based on patient feedback, clinical evidence and best practice, has seen the clinic space refurbished and more specialist staff recruited. The set up was funded by Macmillan Cancer Support and the Thames Valley Cancer Alliance, part of NHS England.

The team of head and neck cancer specialists includes a speech and language therapist, a dietitian, a clinical nurse specialist, a clinical psychologist, a restorative dentist, and a patient coordinator. They see head and neck cancer patients from Swindon and parts of Wiltshire for their follow up appointments so they can avoid frequent travel to Oxford University Hospitals.

South Central and West Commissioning Support Unit have been asked to evaluate the service and provide recommendations for the future, for Swindon and Wiltshire and other areas across Thames Valley Cancer Alliance.
