Axe the Fax

Consultation has concluded

You will be aware, the Secretary of State, Matt Hancock, issued a statement to phase out the use of fax machines in the NHS in December 2018.

Organisations should be moving to modern alternatives such as email which are more effective and secure and whilst some organisations have completed this work or made good progress, many are still working up plans to deliver a fax-free NHS.

This survey is seeking to establish a baseline of progress and plans across NHS trusts and GP practices. It will be used to inform the Secretary of State where the NHS is at with this, and share with colleagues across the NHS successes and challenges organisations have achieved and faced in delivering the project.

Once this survey has been completed future surveys will focus on capturing progress.

Once the information is collated the survey should take no more than 5-10 minutes to complete.

Data will be held in accordance with our privacy policy.

For GP Practices, NHS England has produced a best practice guidance document providing staff the direction, considerations and implementation plans for stopping the use of fax machines.

  • Please complete the survey with as accurate figures / responses as you can. Personal information is optional and if provided will not be published, but may assist us in following up any queries or opportunities to further discuss your successes and challenges with this work.

The person completing this survey should be familiar with any fax removal project that has taken place or is in progress or is aware of the current number and uses for faxes.

Please note the focus of the survey is in relation to fax-machines in use, rather than for instance, Multi-Functional Devices (MFDs), which have the capability of being set-up to send or receive faxes.
