South West Specialised Commissioning Strategic Medium-Term Plan
Across the South West there are 7 Integrated Care Systems and 14 Acute Trusts, 7 Community and Mental Health Trusts and one ambulance service. Since 2023, NHS England has been moving towards delegating specialised commissioning to local areas to deliver.
As part of this work, across the South West, we now need to consider how we will achieve this, collectively and collaboratively. Having a strategic vision developed locally with buy-in across services around the work required to deliver, will set the South West in a position to ensure that we can meet the commissioning requirements of these services.
With this in mind, we are now encouraging you to help shape the Vision for the South West, and to consider what the ambitions for delivery will be and the workstream required to support this delegated commissioning.
We would like to understand from you what your local issues, benefits and priorities are and for you to help us in shaping the draft:
Vision
ambitions
programme
We would would like to encourage you to take some time in responding the survey which sets out the initial draft of the strategic medium-term plan for specialised commissioning in the South West.

Specialised Commissioning
NHS England commissions specialised services which support people with rare and complex conditions.
Specialised services include a wide range of treatments, from things like chemotherapy and kidney dialysis, through to secure inpatient mental health care and surgical procedures like stem cell transplants.
As the NHS goes into the most financially challenging time in its history we owe it to patients and taxpayers to be fair and transparent in how we make decisions about which services we can provide with the money available.
We know advances in medical technologies can transform people's lives. And we are here to ensure as many people as possible benefit from some of the most cutting-edge care in the world, delivered by the NHS.
